Soakaway Installation

If you’re looking for a way to manage excess water on your property, a soakaway may be the solution you need. Designed to collect and disperse water they prevent damage to your property and erosion of the surrounding soil. Learn more about what soakaways are, why they’re important and how we can help you install one.

As drilling experts we’ve completed many soakaways throughout the UK in all kinds of ground conditions.

What are soakaways?

A soakaway, (deep bore soakaway, borehole soakaway or soak pit), manages excess water on your property. It’s a specialist structure that needs careful design and installation by experts.

Most soakaways are for collecting rainwater from a surface, such as a roof or driveway, and allowing it slowly to seep into the surrounding soil. This helps to prevent water damage and erosion, as well as reducing the risk of flooding.

A Soakaway is typically made up of a pit filled with gravel or other porous material, which allows water to filter through and be absorbed by the soil.

GSI’s borehole soakaways

Our soakaways are usually around 200mm wide. We use a perforated plastic liner and gravel to case the borehole and regulate the excess water as it percolates into the ground. We will also grout your borehole and fit a siphon head.

All our soakaways use British Standard casing, this means the materials we use are extremely high quality. We also follow national Building Regulations, guidance from your local council, and the CIRIA SuDS Manual. So you know your soakaway will do its job for competently for many years to come.

Frequency Asked Questions

Why would I need a soakaway?

If you’ve been unfortunate enough to suffer flooding in your home or on your property, you’ll know how much damage and disruption this causes.

Soakaways can be an ideal solution for all kinds of domestic properties, including period or older homes, where the current drainage system can no longer cope with heavier rainfall.

Perhaps, your home is in a rural area where connecting to traditional drainage is not an option or simply too expensive.

In these instances, a deep bore soakaway system could offer you a cost-effective and very workable solution.

How do soakaways work?

We drill borehole soakaways in a very similar way to water wells, except the water disperses away into the ground. They work by collecting excess water from a surface and allowing it to slowly seep into the surrounding soil.

The structure is typically made up of a borehole filled with gravel or other porous material, which allows water to filter through and be absorbed by the soil. This helps to prevent water damage and erosion, as well as reducing the risk of flooding. Soakaways are an effective and environmentally friendly way to manage excess water on your property.

Why are soakaways important for managing excess water?

There are several benefits to using a soakaway system on your property. Firstly, it helps to prevent water damage and erosion by allowing excess water to be absorbed and filtered naturally. This can help to protect your property and the surrounding environment, while also reducing the risk of costly repairs and maintenance. Additionally, soakaways can help to reduce the risk of flooding by allowing excess water to be slowly released into the ground, rather than overwhelming drainage systems. Finally, a soakaway system can help conserve water reusing it for irrigation or other purposes.

How much does a deep bore soakaway cost?

Every project is different as it depends on the geology of your area. We’re more than happy to assess your site, offer advice and provide a no obligation quote.

How do we install a soakaway on your property?

It’s usually quite simple for us to install a soakaway, but it’s important to ensure we do it correctly to avoid any potential issues. The first step is to assess your site and determine the best location for the soakaway, taking into account factors such as soil type, drainage patterns, and proximity to buildings and other structures.

Once we’ve agreed a location, we’ll prepare the area and drill a borehole to the correct depth to ensure it takes away the amount of water you need it to. We’ll construct the soakaway using appropriate materials and techniques and follow local regulations and guidelines.

Can I have a soakaway alongside my existing drainage system?

Yes, a soakaway can be installed and work alongside your existing drainage system, effectively taking away the strain!
